{"id":127,"date":"2009-01-20T01:18:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-20T06:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.argonaut360.com\/?p=127"},"modified":"2009-01-20T01:18:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-20T06:18:00","slug":"davis-bronstein-feud-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.argonaut360.com\/?p=127","title":{"rendered":"Davis-Bronstein Feud, Redux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Followers of San Francisco political warfare will savor the following:<\/p>\n<p>There has been a spot of a Cold War for some time between former Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein and legendary campaign manager Jack Davis \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who first elected Mike Hennessey Sheriff, defeated incumbent Mayor Art Agnos for reelection with political neophyte Frank Jordan, then defeated Jordan for re-election with Willie Brown, and went on the re-elect Brown for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>Bronstein, who was once married to film actress Sharon Stone, now writes a blog for the Chronicle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s website, SFGate. Recounting his version of some recent city controversies, Bronstein called Davis a political bully, or words to that effect. Davis replied with a e-mail blast that summarized many of the high, or low- lights of Bronstein\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tenure as editor of the Hearst San Francisco Examiner who went on to become editor of the Chronicle when the Hearst\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bought it. Copies of Davis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 e-blast provided more than a few chuckles around City Hall during the holiday doldrums past.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>From Davis:<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nPhil, I recently learned of your blog and that you took the liberty to rewrite history as it pertains to me and the seven-foot boot that was parked outside the Examiner\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 with the classic Nancy Sinatra song blasting \u00e2\u20ac\u0153One of these days these boots are going to walk all over you\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 The great Dan O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Neil had the boot made by some talented hippy from Carson City \u00e2\u20ac\u201c\u00c2\u00a0 it was not a left over from some Mitchell Bros party as you mistakenly blogged \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but there were numerous Mitchell Bros dancers in high leather boots picketing the Examiner.<\/p>\n<p>Actually the cowboy boot theme was insider baseball after you broke Clint Reilly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ankle in the Ex\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s editorial boardroom.\u00c2\u00a0 As legend has it Reilly was invited by Will [Will Hearst, than publisher of the Examiner] to pitch direct mail promotion for the Ex and was an invited guest.\u00c2\u00a0 So the lore goes the meeting between Will, you and Clint began with you asking Clint why he would not speak to certain of your reporters.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Just because you fuck them, doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t mean I have to talk to them\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Reilly allegedly replied which led you to jump out of your seat, come around the table, pin Reilly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s foot down with your cowboy boot and snap Clint\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ankle.<\/p>\n<p>While Reilly laid on the floor in pain a panicked Will pondered what to do.\u00c2\u00a0 In comes nurse Ratchet \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Pam Brunger [Examiner managing editor] \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who calls for an ambulance and Clint is wheeled out of the Ex\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s editorial boardroom.\u00c2\u00a0 So much for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153free speech\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 The terms of the out-of-court settlement have never been published but sources believe that your behavior as Editor cost in the six figures.\u00c2\u00a0 How a respected Corporation could tolerate such behavior is beyond me.\u00c2\u00a0 Fortunately for you Will is the largest stockholder.\u00c2\u00a0 Go figure!<\/p>\n<p>The boot idea also seemed relevant after a S.F.
